Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a new requirement for foreign citizens who are visa-free and fly or transit in Canada. This is only needed when the foreigner is traveling to Canada by air, not if he or she is traveling onshore. People who hold a Canadian visa, Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent residence permit do not need an eTA document to enter Canada.
People who need to eat
If an individual is from a visa-free country and obtains a work permit or study permit, he or she will automatically obtain an eTA when he or she accepts an application for a work or study permit. U.S. citizens do not need an eTA or visa to travel to Canada. U.S. citizens can use a valid U.S. passport to visit Canada. U.S. permanent residents or green card holders need eTA to travel to Canada, and must also carry a green card.
If a person is a dual citizen, that is, he or she has Canadian citizenship and at least one citizenship of another country, he or she does not need an eTA to enter Canada. But if he or she travels by air, they must carry a Canadian passport. If a person is a permanent resident of Canada, he or she does not need a Canadian eTA, but a valid PR or permanent resident card or permanent travel document is required to travel to Canada.
Apply for ETA
eTA is a very simple application document. People can easily apply online through the Canadian government website, and the application fee is 7 Canadian dollars. It only takes a few minutes to apply, and once approved, the eTA is valid for up to five years. ETA is an electronic document, which is also electronically linked to an individual’s passport number. The individual did not receive a physical document of eTA from the Canadian government.
The documents required to apply for eTA are a valid passport and email address and a debit or credit card. The ETA lasts for five years or until the individualís passport expires, whichever comes first. With a fully effective eTA, individuals can travel to Canada for short trips at any time as needed, for approximately six months at a time. The information provided in the application is sent electronically to the Department of Immigration Canada, which sends the individual Canadian eTA online via email.
Things to remember
You must always hold a passport or travel document that is valid for at least 6 months from the date the individual arrives in Canada. If you get a new passport, he or she will also need a new eTA. Once the individual’s eTA is approved, he or she must confirm that the passport number in the eTA is the same as the passport number. If they do not match, you must obtain a new eTA.
There are many online portals and companies that advise people and help them easily obtain a Canadian visa. These websites and companies also provide individuals with guidance on how to apply and provide the necessary information that individuals must know before obtaining eTA.
